United States citizens ( most ) think we live in a free country. It’s a myth used to control the masses. We are free as long as we don’t question what truly matters- money and power. We are the most surveilled people in the world. To go against our leaders will guarantee a hard life. Young people know this - it’s why the government is cracking down so much.
Freedom isn't free, and neither are we. It strikes me what a lot of these students who aren't protesting are doing - which is almost all of them - worrying about their "graduation being ruined" and not having their expected bourgeois ritual, because, you know, some children are being ripped to shreds in Gaza, and their phony, imaginary, solipsistic campus-world is temporarily not allowing them to be entirely shielded from reality. They don't give a shit, just want new sneakers and a straight job being peons for The Man.
Well I was listening to WLS radio today in Chicago, something I do not recommend, and I learned that the protestors are simply "anti Israel." At the U of C the cops began the day "clearing" the protestors at 5AM, giving the steadfast gendarmes plenty of time afterwards to get donuts and coffee at their normal time. According to WLS these "anti Israel" protestors were "blocking the quad." Oh my. Because so many people need access to the quad I suppose. ABC 7 reports:
"The raid was swift. Officers dressed in riot gear piled into the pro-Palestinian encampment in the early hours of the morning.
Crews came in with trucks, and removed the dozens of tents and cardboard signs that have decorated the U of C quad for nine days now."
Now we can all enjoy the quad as it was meant to be - empty and purposeless.
The right to assemble is no longer a right? What are large open spaces for? Staying the fuck out of if you have anything to say I guess. Where is free speech allowed exactly?
"Iowa state government headed by... DeSantian ... Kim Reynolds ... increased the penalty for engaging in an “unlawful assembly” from a simple misdemeanor to an aggravated misdemeanor, which could result in two years in prison." 📢🍉
I should add that the movement here is not done. Far from it.
