I often write so positively of Paul's commentaries that I fear some my suspect me of being a paid supporter! I would like to disagree or criticize once in a great while, but I do not and cannot. He's simply right. Short of a stream of vile invectives towards the things we see happening and about which he writes so clearly, what is one to do? We are faced with a habitual state of fear and denial to impending evil and disaster on the part of so many, there then is a desperation to simply hope it's not so and plead, "Say it's not so bad, Santa" to assuage our own fright or suspicions, or hold on to the lingering hope that someone else will take care of it while I remain in hiding.

Hi there Paul - Happy New Year. I hope it's better than 2024! I am Canadian, so I watch what is happening in the USA with great interest. My brother, who has lived in Florida for over 40 years, is a big MAGA supporter and loves Trump. Initially, I think his strong support for Republicans is due to his background in business and also his hatred of the Democrats and especially the Clintons, so when Trump ran against Hillary, my brother was all in for Trump. He is also an immigrant who became an American citizen and married an American woman. He believes people should enter the country legally and he wants all the illegals to be sent home. I don't think he is a racist, but he might hold some negative views about blacks due to crimes, lack of jobs, etc. (in other words, poverty). He graduated high school but did not go beyond. He's actually a very nice guy, but holds conservative values. He's not particularly religious. He opposes foreign wars. So, I tell you that because I think there are a lot of folks like my brother who just are disgusted with the Democratic party and they believe Trump's lies (maybe willfull blindness?). Whenever I send him information about Trump that exposes his vile character, my brother just dismisses that as fake news. So, there you go. I think the Trump supporters are a mixed bag...but by and large, the one common denominator is they all hate Democrats.

One more comment ... I found this to be instructive: Harris beat Trump by five points with union households.

I find it really interesting that unionized workers would support Harris after Biden did a nasty to the railway workers when they were on strike. Also, Biden has done nothing to expand unionization in the USA. Biden is a fake union guy, and Harris has no clue at all. Regarding abortion, the Democrats could have, and should have, made access to abortion legal a long time ago, but they keep it front and centre as an election issue. This is disgusting. It's no wonder the Democrats lost this election to a delusional convicted felon like Trump. Democrats cannot be trusted. (BTW, we have our own weird politics happening in Canada these days).

Anyway, despite Biden's betrayal of unions, the union workers still favoured Harris. You'd think that would give the Democrats some pause to consider maybe they should put more effort into helping the union movement grow. I think the Democrats are captured by the donor class and no longer care about workers.

I fear for the average American who is struggling to make ends meet. Good luck, all!

What about the polling data that showed Trump gaining among Blacks and Hispanics?

Parts of those demographics hardly without exposure to and penetration by nativism, patriarchy, reactionary Christianity, right wing media, hatred and more. Not surprising to me. Always the awfulness of the Dems factors in.

Thank you for your energy filled essay/ongoing discussion. I wonder if possibly the now cliche, “We are all ‘hard wired’ for all this” will gain traction as a stupid to say thing from the uber nihilists. Looking back to 2017, I attended a Keystone XL protest in LA and saw some folks from Refuse Fascism. I was depressed about the Trump v Clinton decision but I went to the RF office the next week and picked up on the strategy of organizing for resistance. We haven’t won but hopefully there will be a spark. We need to build a revolutionary movement that will sweep away this whole system of capitalism/imperialism. This country didn’t emerge from a revolutionary war, it merely won the title of whiteness “means”strength in a genocidal land grab. Trump inhabits this characterization like a gnats ass on the back of a tobacco leaf!
