Ourimpression was tha Weimar was full of good intentions. They tried until the end i think to differentiate themselves from Russia. My favorite Saul Bellows Mr. SAMMLERSplanet you wld not be able to teach. Because it is high camp abt a man entirely a believer in participatory democracy running hard against the caprices of the People who would rather gather for a circus. Maybe Elvis Costello was wrong and right. Maybe we are vicious before "we think we know what we want".

At the same time if none of your students read Bellows they surely would be following their own paths. Because i donot even know where he stood on our ovrrseas adventures. Not to mention that Sammlers Planet clearly inspired the Ur text of the federalist society and the lifeplans of U.S. fascist chieftans in Allen Bloom's Closing of the American Mind. Those two were best friends. You need to teach the last chapter of the Closing of-. That was template for all of this posttruth power grabbing. Rhetoric broken off from dog in the game reasoning has to be a formula for war and glamor and disaster.
